Buy squash strings: find the best squash string for your game

Looking for new squash strings? At Squashpoint you'll find a carefully curated range of squash strings from top brands like Tecnifibre, Ashaway and Dunlop. A squash string is the most underrated part of your equipment — but ask an experienced squash player and they'll tell you how big the difference is. The right squash string largely determines how your racket feels, how much control you have and how powerful your shots are. Whether you play recreationally or at competition level: the choice of squash string makes a world of difference on court.

Which squash string should I buy?

The best squash string depends on your level and playing style. As a rule of thumb: the more advanced you are, the thinner the string you want.

  • Beginner / recreational — choose a squash string of 1.20 to 1.30 mm. More enjoyment, better comfort and longer durability.
  • Advanced — go for 1.15 or 1.20 mm. More feel, better feedback and sharper ball contact.
  • Competition / top player — choose 1.10 or 1.15 mm. The thinnest gauge for maximum control and the sharpest feel. This is the choice of professional players on the PSA World Tour.

3 types of squash strings

Not all squash strings are the same. There are three main types, each with their own playing characteristics:

Multifilament — the most popular squash string among players at all levels. A multifilament string consists of many thin fibres bundled together, providing excellent feel, good tension maintenance and a pleasant response. Most professional squash strings — including the iconic Tecnifibre 305 — are built on multifilament technology.

Synthetic — synthetic squash strings made from nylon or polyester offer a good balance between durability and performance. Slightly stiffer than multifilament, but they last longer. An excellent choice for recreational players or players who break strings regularly.

Natural gut — the most advanced squash string in existence. Offers unmatched feel and excellent tension maintenance, but is also the most sensitive option in terms of maintenance and price. For the demanding squash player who wants to get the most out of their game.

Squash string gauge: what is the difference between 1.10 and 1.25 mm?

The gauge of a squash string directly influences four playing characteristics:

Control vs. power — a thinner squash string (1.10 mm) bites harder into the ball and provides more grip at the moment of contact. This delivers more feel and control. A thicker squash string (1.25 mm) generates more power through a trampoline effect.

Feel — thinner squash strings are more sensitive and provide more feedback on the quality of your shot. Advanced players therefore almost always choose 1.10 mm.

Durability — the thinner the squash string, the faster it wears or breaks, especially with an aggressive technique or intensive use. Thicker strings last longer, but sacrifice feel.

Tension — for most squash strings, the recommended stringing tension is between 10 and 13 kg. Thinner strings can generally be strung slightly higher without breaking, which further increases control.

Frequently asked questions about squash strings

How often should I replace my squash strings?
A rule of thumb: replace your squash strings as many times per year as you play per week. If you play twice a week, new strings every six months is sensible. Strings lose their tension and playing characteristics even without visible wear.

What is the difference between 1.15 mm and 1.25 mm squash string?
A 1.15 mm string provides more feel, control and direct feedback — ideal for advanced and competition players. A 1.25 mm string is more durable and comfortable for recreational players and beginners who hit off-centre more often.

At what tension should I have my squash racket strung?
The standard recommendation for squash strings is between 10 and 13 kg. A lower tension gives more power and comfort; a higher tension gives more control. Start at 11 kg if you're unsure.

What is the best squash string for beginners?
For beginners, a synthetic squash string or a multifilament string of 1.20 to 1.30 mm is the best choice. Comfortable, durable and forgiving on off-centre hits.

What is the best squash string for advanced players?
The Tecnifibre 305 Squash in 1.10 mm is the most chosen squash string for advanced and competition players worldwide. Multifilament, produced in France, with excellent feel and proven performance at the highest level.
